Funding Strategies for Global Action Networks

Past Workshops

Dec. 21, 2004 - What are the strategies for funding global networks?

Frances Seymour of the World Resources Institute (WRI) described various funding strategies relevant for global networks. Frances is the Director of the Institutions and Governance Program at WRI and co-founder of The Access Initiative (TAI) and the Partnership for Principle 10 (PP10).

Frances told the story of how she and her team at WRI were able to fund the start-up and scaling of a major new initiative (TAI/PP10), including descriptions of diverse challenges and creative solutions along the way. The TAI/PP10 story illustrates of a number of funding issues relevant for global networks:

  • Finding seed money for a new initiative
  • Funding at both global and local levels - pros and cons
  • Challenges of traditional program-based funding sources
  • Improvising to take advantage of unique opportunities
  • Skills and staff support
  • Importance of personal relationships
  • Organizing a coalition of potential donors
  • Mainstreaming for long-term sustainability
