Peer-to-Peer Learning Strategies

Sam Daley-Harris of the Microcredit Summit Campaign described various strategies for promoting peer-to-peer learning and coordination among local participants in a highly distributed global network. Sam is the President and Campaign Director of the Microcredit Summit, a nine-year campaign whose goal is to reach 100 million of the world’s poorest families by 2005.

There are over 5000 institutions that have participated in the Microcredit Campaign, and in the 12 months ending April 2005 there will have been 2400 delegates from over 100 countries that have participated in Microcredit Campaign global and regional conferences.  (See the Microcredit Campaign Report.)

The Microcredit Summit story illustrates how to use an array of peer-to-peer learning activities to build capacity among local institutions and country associations in developing countries worldwide.

Issues we explored include:

  • How to recruit the participation of local groups in a global network?
  • How to design global and regional conferences that promote peer learning and connecting?
  • What are types of activities and success factors for each? Examples include: conferences, local workshops, action plans, collaborative projects, materials (papers, tools, videos), e-newsletters, and targeted gatherings (associations, sectors)
  • What are the roles of the global secretariat and regional staff?
  • How address relatively low levels of participation in key regions or countries?
