Nov. 10, 2004 - What is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) measurement approach? How can it help GANs to measure their impact?
The GRI is a GAN leading a multi-stakeholder process with the goal of developing and disseminating globally applicable Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. Having completed its first fiscal year as an independent institution, GRI decided to apply its reporting framework to itself. This workshop occurred after GRI had completed its initial assessment and just before it finalized the assessment.
GRI found that simply translating the standard GRI set of indicators was not sufficient. It needed to develop customized measures that address unique GRI characteristics and initiatives. Stakeholders challenged GRI to address ultimate contributions to sustainability outcomes. Impact measures are hard to quantify; activity measures are (participation, etc.) easier. It leaves open the question about the causal links between what GRI does and what it wants to achieve.
